Birds walk it offUpdated Monday June 15, 2015 by Joshua Goldstein.
On a warm evening at Heritage Park, the Firebirds and Cobras met up with both teams realing from a game the day before. After the visiting Cobras jumped to a two run lead in the top of the first they sent former Firebird Justin Biggs to the mound for his first start of the season. After rookie Craig Maitland lead off with a loud out line drive to right feild, Justin was able to settle things down- but not before the birds pushed one past. Billy Bosher did his usual thing after an uncharactaristically rusty first with 4 K's over the next 2 which allowed for the birds to manufacture a run and tie things up. In the 4th the birds jumped ahead, but the lead vanished in the 6th with back to back doubles.
A tidy defensive inning left the firebirds down a run coming into the bottom of 7. With the bottom of the order due up - and the Cobras starter still going strong, the birds had to dig deep. After a lead-off walk to Joshua Goldstein, the bullpen came in to go for the save. Vince Thorndycraft took one for the team and after rookie Justin Sutton advanced the runners over there were runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out for leadoff Craig Maitland who doubled through the gap for the walk off single and finished the game with 4 rbi.
The Firebirds will look to stay solid defensively and grit out another win when they face the Dogers this Friday.
